Justin Wilcox, 33, said the Tennessee job was to good to pass up. He was right. Tennessee has one of the most powerful defenses in the Nation and has for quite some time. Under the leadership of John Chavis and Monte Kiffin the Vols have put some strong units on the field over the past decade. The two respectively got pretty used to winning by intimidating opposing offenses who dared to step on the field any given Saturday. Truth be known, had Phil Fulmer been able to salvage a dissapointing 2008 season John Chavis may have very well been on the staff today receiving faxes as they were coming across the lines. But as fate would have it, Chavis encountered that crossroad in his career where he had to make a choice.Monte Kiffin, well that's another story. By now we all know that Monte is a legend when it comes to Football, but not necessarily in the college ranks. Monte made his name in Tampa Bay with the Buccaneers who won a SuperBowl in 2003. The name became notorious for putting monster defenses on the field that were punishing and inflicted embarrasment on unsuspecting Quarterbacks.
Let's face it, these guys have been around the block. They know defenses like the back of their hand and they draw plays in their sleep. If you were to ask anyone about these guys, you may get a surprising "oh Yeah". Bottom line they are used to winning and have made names for themselves in a business which can be pretty stressful to coaches on the sidelines.
So what does Tennessee do to fill the void. They go out and hire Justin Wilcox. Who's that? Well, before we jump to conclusions or make any assumptions let's take a look further. Turns out Mr. Wilcox is pretty used to winning as well. At just 33 years old this guy has had his share of jubilant sideline victory cheers at a program eho is considered one of the top programs in the country. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, I know they are in the WAC but given some of the performances and level of talent these guys put on the field there is no doubt the guy can coach. I'm not saying there is Monte or John status here just yet, but the kid has promise. All of this may seem like a some pretty big shoes to fill, but with the talent Mr. Wilcox just inherited I think he may be able to "foot" the bill.
