Defensive tackleOn the Hoof: Thick-necked lineman with traps of a body builder. He has very little bad body weight and actually looks more like a huge inside linebacker than a defensive tackle. His lower body is muscular yet very athletic.
Lake City (FL) Columbia
Ht: 6-foot-2
Wt: 275 lbs
Class: 2011 (High School)
Needs Improvement: Does he have the frame to add enough size to play inside? Has a tendency to play high using strictly his superior athleticism rather than winning the pad level battle. He must improve overall technique to become an every-down defensive tackle.
Most Impressive: His overall athleticism is off the chart and he can chase ballcarriers all over the field. Jernigan is very quick off the ball and a serious pass-rushing threat. His athleticism may allow him to play strongside defensive end in the mold of Dwight Freeney.
Conclusion: His pass-rushing skills and overall athleticism may give him a shot to play early even though he may lack the size. Not many defensive tackles have the speed to cover kicks but this defensive tackle does. DonĂ¢€™t be surprised if he ends up all-conference at defensive end before his career is over.
