Phillip Fulmer |
Literally. Took ‘em out of our head, rolled ‘em across the table, and then put ‘em back in.
Then a Knoxville television station reported that a source “close to” the former UT coach had confirmed Fulmer’s interest.
So is Fulmer interested? Probably. Is he interested enough to really take the Connecticut job if offered? Probably not.
As we stated yesterday, Fulmer is likely more interested in keeping his name in the spotlight. It’s not like other coaches — Jon Gruden — don’t have their reps constantly float their names for jobs they would never, ever take.
Turns out, even the folks at UConnReport.com (which is the Rivals site for Connecticut) are having a hard time buying the Fulmer to Storrs chatter:
“We don’t mean to be the ‘Debbie Downer’ of this party, but we find it a little hard to believe that after sitting out two years Fulmer would return as coach of UConn of all schools. Storrs, CT just seems out of place from his entire career which has been spent in the south.”
And proving that one’s man trash is another man’s treasure, the folks in Storrs would apparently celebrate the landing of a coach with a hall of fame resume… regardless of how his tenure ended in the “win big, win now” SEC:
“Trust me, we would love to be wrong about this.”
Unfortunately for the folks in the Nutmeg State, we agree that they’re probably right. Fulmer to Connecticut just seems to be too big a stretch.
